This link provides access to a website designed to assist radiologists who wish to integrate the principles of 'Evidence-Based Practice' into the way they approach the knowledge gaps that are inevitably encountered in the modern practice of radiology.
In 1999, an 'Evidence-Based Radiology' group was started in St. Vincent's University Hospital, Dublin by Dr. D.E. Malone. The purpose of this group was to teach non-interpretative skills, especially literature searching and critical appraisal, to Radiology residents and fellows. Group members learn the principles of 'Evidence-Based Practice' as derived in McMaster University and the NHS Centre for Evidence-Based Medicine, Oxford (UK) and integrate these principles with the technology assessment and ALARA paradigms in the development of departmental protocols based on current best research evidence. Adult learning theory is included and will, it is hoped, influence the group members eventual strategies for continuing professional development.
The group, which comprised D.E. Malone and interested residents and fellows, developed support materials that facilitate self-directed learning about evidence-based radiology. These have, since 2001, been available online at http://www.evidencebasedradiology.net
This site provides background material, tutorials, downloadable spreadsheets, links and examples of EBR in practice. Access is free and all radiologists interested in this area are welcome to use it.
A detailed description of the site has been published online by the European Congress of Radiology as an educational poster in the 2003 EPOS exhibition. ECR members may view this online or download the exhibit in PDF format from http://epos.myecr.org/ . The presentation ID is C-0403.
